A new option for amputees: robotics

For nearly eight years, amputees have used metal hooks in replacement to their severed limbs; DARPA, the US Defense Department’s advanced research agency had exerted effort to search for a better solution for this. One of the projects has received approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it is a mind-controlled prosthetic limb dubbed as the DEKA Arm.

The DEKA Arm System is also called “The Luke,” following Star War’s character Luke Skywalker who lost a hand in a fight with Darth Vader, and has received a robotic replacement.
Many other scientists and engineers all over the world are trying to create a device of the similar concept, but “The Luke,” is the first to be approved by the FDA. The device came from a company founded by Dean Kamen (the Segway inventor), it is more or less the size and weight of an adult arm. Electromyogram electrodes positioned on the lasting portion of the human arm controls the prosthetic. These sensors pick up the signals from the upper arm, and the computer in the robotic arm converts these signals to the maneuver the user wants to make.
